The MD 78 is a boat that meets the requirements of an owner who wants an elegant, fast and easy-to-drive hull to sail the Mediterranean on long cruises, with the prospect of also participating in some offshore regattas in Med.
After a series of reflections to fine-tune the needs of life on board and the different expectations of the owner, the project took the study number CYD 200, which is in an advanced stage of execution at Maxi Dolphin, a shipyard of great fame and tradition for this type of yachts.
The hull is distinguished by a relatively small waterline width, resulting in inset water lines and a modest wetted surface. The bow sections are deep for good passage over waves to make it comfortable and dry, the stern sections are wide but flared to reduce the increase in resistance when the boat heels over. The maximum beam of 6.55 m is almost constant all the way to the stern and the shapes of the hull and appendages have been validated with CFD, as is now standard practice for all CYD projects, both sail and motor.
A double blade rudder system has been chosen, with great care taken in the choice of position, and a lifting T-keel, with a draught that goes from 2.9 metres when raised to 5.15 metres when under sail. A choice that ensures great power under sail thanks to the high righting moment, but also access to ports.
The sides incorporates architectural stylistic features that make the hand of Giovanni Ceccarelli recognisable, such as the inverted sheerline and a graphic sign on the side; the bow is vertical, as is the transom. The deck is characterised by a very low and streamlined deckhouse that loses consistency at the bow by way of the mast to preserve functional and structural aspects that short deckhouses fail to fulfil. The cockpit is large with two distinct areas forward via large seats that die on the aft face of the deckhouse, which is made of circular glass, and the manoeuvring area aft. The deck is largely covered in teak.
With the same sail plan and rig as the thoroughbred of the sea, the MD 78 can cope with both cruising and racing. The square-top mainsail is characterised by a strong elongation, the bow triangle has an abundant J and a wide bowsprit on which to hoist both the Code Zero and asymmetrical kites, on the forestay rises a 103% furling genoa with a sheet point on the transverse rails that in race configuration will allow for corrected sheet points. The Stay Sail is furled on the transverse rail, a further furling jib is furled on an even further inboard point with the halyard reaching to the first spreader. Doyle made the sails and Hall Spar made the mast boom and carbon rigging.
The construction of the hull and deck is carried out on female moulds using only carbon fibre fabric with wet lay-up, according to a technology developed by the Maxy Dolphin shipyard that allows for total control of the production process in all its phases and to minimize the input of parasitic resin; it is a much more sophisticated system than infusion and allows for a higher quality product.
The interiors have been developed according to the owner's needs and consist of a large forward cabin, with a separate bathroom and shower forward of the bed head, two VIP cabins with independent bathrooms. The lifting keel is an integral part of the interior design and fits into the large dinette, the galley on the starboard side is deliberately in contact with the dinette.
For the crew there are two independent cabins with their own bathrooms.
The design of the furnishings is in the style of a modern and functional boat, the decoration was defined in accordance with the needs of the owner, who contributed to the final choice of finishes.
The systems will be designed in the direction of maximum simplicity of use, and ease of maneuvering while sailing. For example, both a bow thruster and aft thruster are planned, as well as a sail trim aid.
The ambition of the MD 78 is to be a tailor-made custom-designed and built in Italy to be a boat that will give satisfaction to the captain and his crew.
